Q: What is the God & Country religious awards program?

A: Created by the national church bodies cooperating with P.R.A.Y., God and Country is a CHURCH program, not a scouting program. God and Country includes emblems/awards which are approved for wear on the official Boy Scout, Girl Scout, American Heritage Girls, and Camp Fire uniforms. God and Country is a Christian Education Resource for Grades 1-12. It is a Bible based curriculum and requires that students read scripture and answer questions about the Bible.

The God and Life curriculum is the final program in the God and Country series. Students in the God and Life program will seek to understand their call to a life of discipleship and will focus on the life of the Apostle Paul as recorded in Acts 9:1-31. This is a brief account that describes how Paul encountered Christ and was changed forever. Five chronological "events" out of this story will be highlighted and used as the focus for the five different sections in this program. Each section will illustrate a key element in learning how to live one's life for Christ.

Q: Is the program just for Episcopalians?

A: No, The Virginia Episcopal Scouting Association will be offering God and Country that is appropriate for members of Protestant and Independent Christian churches, which includes Methodist, Lutheran, Baptist, Presbyterian, Pentecostal, Episcopal, UCC, Disciples of Christ, and other denominations. If you are part of another faith, you can talk with your religious leader about pursuing the religious awards for your faith.

Q: What ages can be involved?

A: This program is for girls and boys in Grades 9-12.

Q: Where and when is the program?

A: 6 Sunday afternoons starting October 15, 2017 and ending November 19, 2017 at Christ Church Episcopal, 5000 Pouncey Tract Rd, Glen Allen, VA 23059.

Q: Is there a cost involved?

A: A $25 per person supplies fee will be charged to cover workbooks and supplies. Fees will be required to register and space is limited to 12 Scouts on a first come, first served basis. A late fee will apply after 10/6. Register here after August 15, 2017.

If you prefer to mail a check you can mail checks made payable to VA-ESA to 3309 Aprilbud Pl, Richmond, VA 23233.

Q: What should I bring?

A: Additional supplies may be required for later classes, but plan to bring a Bible, pen or pencil, and notebook to the first class. Attending with a good attitude and an open heart is also strongly encouraged.

Q: What should I wear?

A: While most of the participants will be Scouts, Scout uniforms are NOT required. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable, but tasteful clothing appropriate to the weather.

Q: Do parents attend?

A: Some parents do stay, but we have found that in most cases open discussion is easier without parental involvement. The last class will have an opportunity for family members to attend and enjoy some fellowship and review class completion. There are numerous quiet, reflective places on the grounds to enjoy while waiting, and nearby Short Pump offers a wide variety of eating and shopping opportunities.
